They say that if you love your job, you will never work a day in your life.
Easier said than done. How many people actually achieve this? Very few. As a result, many people don’t enjoy their work, and never enjoy a career of distinction or meaning.
Why is this? Most people are just going through the motions in their career, coasting on inertia. They have no intention in their career. They’re just doing what they have always done … and as a result, despite wishing for more, they keep getting what they always got.
If this is the situation you find yourself in, career coaching can help you achieve clarity in your professional path — to start moving with intention towards massively better career outcomes. Promotion. Income. Autonomy. Fulfillment. Here’s how …
Identify What Really Matters
When I meet a new client, I’m often struck by how in setting their career path, they have listened intently to everyone but themselves. Their parents. Their teachers. The news. The guy on TikTok. Everyone has an opinion … and most people care far too much about those other peoples’ opinions.
As your career coach, I’m not your mom. I’m not your college professor. There is no way you can possibly disappoint me. I’m the neutral, dispassionate sounding board that you can say all the things you might have been afraid to say. All the things that go against the grain, that buck “common sense,” that point in the direction of what really matters to you.
Forget playing it safe. Let’s dreamcast a little bit. What could you do with your life that would have you jumping out of bed, thrilled to get to work? Let’s begin with the end in mind and then work towards that goal.
Overcome Limiting Beliefs
The biggest obstacle to a fulfilling career is usually the cruel voice in our own heads. “You’re not smart enough.” “You don’t have the right credentials.” “It’s too competitive — what makes you think you can make it?” “Everyone hates their job. What makes you so special?” Most of us have a voice in our heads, and the voice is a mean SOB.
Moreover, it’s mostly lies. Millions of people have achieved what you dream of achieving professionally. Maybe not overnight, but they got there because they got started and were flabbergasted to realize that no one stopped them, so they just kept going.
So a big part of my job is replacing the voice of that evil inner critic with my voice — the voice that says you can do it. That all those limiting beliefs are just excuses. That it can be done … and you deserve it.
Avoid the Sunk Cost Fallacy
“I spent so much money getting my degree … I’ve been working in this industry for so long … I can’t just walk away. I’m in too deep.”
The sunk cost fallacy is the fallacy that because we have invested so much in a course of action, we have to keep going on that course … even if it’s obviously not working. You might be miserable, but if you change now, all the time, money, and energy you invested in this direction is a waste.
As a coach, I’m constantly helping people stiffen their spine to make that hardest of all choices: “It doesn’t matter how much I have invested in this career path … It’s not working for me, and I need to make a big change.”
Accountability and Action
Results start with intention, but they don’t follow intention. They follow action. Once we have clarity and have conquered limiting beliefs, it’s time to take action. As a coach, I can help you chart out a step-by-step action plan to turn that clarity into reality.
Action plans are powerful. You would be amazed at how much you can achieve, and how quickly, just by taking one small step, every day, in the direction you want to go.
A fulfilling and lucrative career is possible if you reach out and grab it. But it takes clarity, intention, and action. If you feel stuck, not sure what your next career move should be, consider career coaching. Book a free intro session and learn more about how coaching can help you.
